Maverick went peacefully, around 9:50 AM on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. He was about two months shy of his fifth birthday.

Tomorrow I have to have my buddy put to sleep. He’s become a danger to everyone around him that isn’t Nicole or Me. Or her grandmother. His aggression has gotten to the point that it’s safest to have him euthanized. He’s been a handful for the five years we’ve had him, and we’ve done as much for him as we can considering the circumstances.

Maverick was a rescue dog, another one of those “projects” that Nicole likes to start and give up on midway through. We didn’t give up on him though. We took him to obedience classes, we even got him a friend. In the long run, it didn’t matter. He was inherently mistrustful of people, never having been socialized properly as a puppy.

Weimaraners are, by their nature, pretty territorial and protective, and this was amplified by Maverick’s fear of strangers. He had gone after several people, and eventually he sunk his teeth into Nicole’s aunt while we were on vacation last summer.

With all that has happened between Nicole and I over the last few months, he’s been granted a short reprieve, but, tomorrow at 9:15 AM, he is going to a place where he can run and run and not be scared of anybody again.

Perfect Fall Day

The Steelers are on tonight, so I’m going to the house to help winterize (read winterize) the backyard. Nicole is verra sick, and it falls to me to do this stuff. She wouldn’t do it if she were healthy, or it would be done by now. Furniture gets put away, pool gets drained and cleaned and put away, shovels and rocksalt and snow blower get moved to front porch. Trash gets put out, and so on. I feel like the help sometimes. Oh well.

Three days off.

I’m considering making chicken tortilla soup today. It’s plenty cold out, I just need a recipe. Hmmm.

Podium Lackey

Working as a podium assistant type tonight. No PA on payday means that Sean is stuck at the front of the floor instead of in his comfy office off the back of the floor. Skeleton crew tonight, Laverne has things well in hand.

Talked to Nicole tonight, we discussed the fact that we need to talk about working things out between the two of us, one way or another. I think that I want to try harder at this marriage thing. It’s not supposed to be easy. It’s not supposed to be all about one person or the other, and the sooner our self-centered personalities can reconcile that, the better. We don’t want to go back to fighting all the time, and I don’t want to come back, stay for six months, then move out. I want to come back, get things settled once and for all, and stay forever.

And remodel the house. The place needs a shit ton of work done to it. More on that later.

So Nicole and I split up in August. It’s been a rough roller coaster of emotion for me, dealing with the stages of grief about the whole thing. I started out angry and upset, and I felt that I was going to spend the rest of my life alone, and I moved into the “woe is me” portion of the set, and I’ve lately moved into acceptance of the inevitable. Nicole and I are completely different people than we were when we met, we’re totally different than we were when we got married, and I’ll say that we are different than we were before we both finished college. I’m not sure where the future leads, but I know one thing. I’ll be the one who decides my fate. Nobody else can hold a fucking candle to me when it comes to that.

There are a few people who have been rocks for me through this: My mom and dad, who have basically kept me from leaping off a cliff. Julia, without whom I would not be able to form a positive outlook. Finally, the ever changing crew at work: Frank, Laverne, Kevin, Nikki, Renae, Wes, Rob, Debbie and Kelly, who have all managed to not let me kill any employees. Yet.

Nicole decided that since Haley is 13, and the picture on the actual gift card is a bit more risque than that, she should censor it. She cut out a t-shirt from the Kohl’s ad and taped it to the gift card. Everyone will giggle.

I never watch Monday Night Football because I usually have to get up for work on tuesdays. I snoozed on the couch tonight, because it’s Bears-Packers. The Bears drive down and tie it at 17 – 17 with little time left. Big return on the kickoff, late hit penalty, and the Packers are set up for the game winning FG and it gets BLOCKED! We go to overtime, and the Bears are about to either punch it in or kick the FG to win it. 38-yarder to win and …timeout. I hate that. None of this shit anymore NFL coaches. Let ‘em kick. All set up again, and it’s good. Bears stay alive.

Did I mention that it was about 60 below with the wind chill in Chicago tonight?

The stupid NFL territorial restrictions prevented the Steelers game from being broadcast in the Erie market for only the second time this year, which was okay. On my way home from work, I got a text from Ryan saying that he’d bought the on day NFL ticket for the day, so I talked to Nicole and then hightailed it out to Girard.

What an absolute waste of time that game was. Ben Roethlisberger turned the ball over FOUR times, they couldn’t run the ball at all, the defense finally had a bad game, and the Steelers lost to Tennessee 31-14. Doesn’t really matter in the big picture, though, since the Steelers have wrapped up a bye and a second round home game.

Cleveland catches the tiger by the tail next weekend.
